2024 is a big year for the environmental justice movement. Here's some key campaigning dates for your diary, for our United for Warm Homes campaign and other campaigns that our network is involved in locally. We’ve included resources to get you started, as well as objectives to help focus your campaigning.
Please note: this calendar isn't exhaustive and we'll be reviewing this information and adding in new "moments" and resources to reflect what's happening in the world. This is so your campaigns can stay reactive and relevant. Watch this space!
Apr – Jun 2024
In May, people in several regions across England will head to the polls to vote for their metro mayors. In these areas groups will be working in partnership with others across their region to persuade their mayoral candidates to commit to a Climate Action Plan for their region.
During the summer, we’ll be coming together for our in-person Summer Action Gatherings, to connect with each other and develop our campaigning skills. Refugee Week and Great Big Green Week will also be important moments for us to connect as a movement, build relationships with community partners and amplify the call for international climate justice.
Combined authority mayoral elections
Campaigning period:now – Jun 2024
If your group operates in a combined authority area, you can participate in this campaign. Metro mayors are the leaders of combined authorities and can have significant powers within a region.
Main objective: engage with metro mayoral candidates. Invite them to face to face meetings, organising hustings and encourage candidates to sign your pledge.
From May onwards, the focus will shift to holding winning candidates to account.
United for Warm Homes: winning MP and election candidates support
Campaigning period: now until the general election
Following our successful Day of Action, it's crucial community groups from across England and Wales continue to put pressure on their MPs and general election candidates.
What? A day to give you the tools to contribute to a more equitable and united fight for a sustainable future.
Why? To come together to build a movement that represents everyone. Gain skills and feel confident to develop and run environmental justice campaigns with an anti-racism focus.
If you’re campaigning for your council to adopt and deliver an ambitious Climate Action Plan, these elections will be a key moment for you to win real commitments from your future councillors.
Main objective: get candidates to make solid commitments around climate and environmental action.
Our Summer Action Gatherings are friendly, inclusive events for Friends of the Earth local action group members and the wider environmental justice activist network.
Main objective: a day for local action groups to share, connect, plot and plan.
As part of a worldwide network, one way to show international solidarity is to make our home country a welcoming one. That’s why we’re taking part in Refugee Week in 2024, and we want you to join us.
Main objective: build relationships with and work with community partners, including refugees and people seeking asylum.
The Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. Every year, people come together to unleash a wave of support for action to protect the planet.
As we come towards the end of the year, we’ll reflect on what we’ve achieved together as a movement and come together for mobilisations and events around COP29 so that we enter 2025 a stronger, more connected and more inspired movement.
General election
We also know that a general election will be called at some point in 2024, although it's unclear when this will be. Once the date's confirmed, we'll provide your group with training and resources to make climate, nature and social justice a key election issue in your local area.
